The Family Behind Children Shop Canada

Built by parents, for parents — we make it simpler to find safe, well-made products your children will actually love.

Our Story

Why We Started

In the spring of 2021, two Toronto-based parents — Elena and David — found themselves on yet another frustrating late-night shopping marathon. Their toddler had outgrown his winter gear in what felt like six weeks, their newborn needed hypoallergenic sleepers that were perpetually out of stock domestically, and the only educational toy they trusted was shipping from Europe with a three-week lead time and a customs invoice that arrived separately.

The problem was glaringly simple: no single Canadian retailer offered a genuinely curated, safety-first children's catalogue that covered everything from birth to grade school. The big box stores had volume but questionable curation. The boutique shops had taste but no inventory depth. The international sites had both, but shipping timelines and return logistics were painstaking at best.

So they built one. Elena, who had spent nine years in product sourcing for a large Canadian apparel company, brought supplier relationships and a methodical eye for fabric quality. David, a logistics operations manager, designed the fulfilment workflow from the warehouse floor up. They opened the first iteration of Children Shop Canada from a 400-square-foot sublet in the Dundas West neighbourhood, personally packing every order for the first four months.

Five years later, the 400-square-foot sublet has become a 6,000-square-foot warehouse near Pearson International Airport, the catalogue has grown from 120 items to over 2,100, and the team has expanded to eleven full-time employees. The founding conviction, though, hasn't changed: every product earns its spot through verified safety, honest quality, and genuine usefulness to a Canadian family.

Mission & Values

What Guides Every Decision

Our mission is straightforward: make it easy for Canadian families to find safe, well-crafted children's products — without compromise, without confusion, without the customs invoice.

Safety First, Always

Every product in our catalogue meets or exceeds Canadian Safety Standards (CSA) and applicable Health Canada regulations. We audit supplier certifications quarterly, test fabric compositions for allergens, and verify age-grading on toys against the Canadian Toy Testing Council's guidelines. If a product fails any checkpoint, it never reaches our shelves — regardless of the brand name attached to it.

Honest Curation

We carry roughly 2,100 products — not 20,000. That's intentional. Our buying team personally evaluates every item, cross-referencing real parent feedback, durability testing, and value-for-money ratios. The result is a catalogue where nothing is filler. Every listing earns its spot, and product descriptions are written by parents who have actually used or handled the item.

Sustainability Matters

Children outgrow things quickly, and we try to minimize the environmental footprint of that reality. Over 40% of our clothing line uses organic or recycled materials. Our packaging is FSC-certified and plastic-free. We partner with a textile recycler in the GTA that accepts worn-out children's clothing — customers can request a prepaid return label at any time.

Quality Assurance

How We Vet Every Product

Our quality process isn't something we outsource or automate. It's a seven-step checklist that the buying team runs for every single SKU before it enters our warehouse. The process starts with verifying the manufacturer's Health Canada compliance documentation and ends with a wear-test by one of our staff parents — a real child uses the product in a real home for at least two weeks before we approve it for listing.

Between those bookends, we check fabric composition against OEKO-TEX Standard 100 criteria (even when the manufacturer hasn't obtained the certification themselves), test moving parts on toys for pinch-and-shear hazards, and verify that age labels align with the Canadian Toy Testing Council's developmental benchmarks. Products with small parts receive an additional choke-tube assessment before they are cleared for our under-3 category.

Coast to Coast

Shipping Across Every Province and Territory

Our fulfilment centre sits near Toronto Pearson International Airport, which gives us direct access to Canada Post's national sorting hub and multiple courier networks. Standard orders placed before 2:00 PM EST on a business day ship the same afternoon. That translates to 2–4 business days for most of Ontario and Quebec, 3–5 days for the Prairie provinces and British Columbia, and 5–7 days for Atlantic Canada, the territories, and remote communities.

Free standard shipping kicks in at $75 — no coupon required. For orders under that threshold, flat-rate shipping is $7.95 regardless of weight or destination within Canada. Expedited options (1–3 business day delivery) are available at checkout for most urban and suburban postal codes. We do not ship internationally at this time, though it's something the team is actively evaluating for 2027.

Our Team

The People Behind the Products

A small team with deep expertise in product sourcing, logistics, and — most importantly — raising kids in Canada.

ET

Elena T.

Co-Founder & Head of Product

(BSc Textile Science, 12 years in apparel sourcing)

Elena spent nine years managing supplier relationships for a national Canadian apparel chain before launching Children Shop Canada. She personally visits manufacturing partners twice a year and runs the seven-step quality checklist for every new SKU. Colleagues describe her evaluation process as "unglamorous but meticulous" — which she takes as a compliment. Outside work, she's raising two boys under seven in midtown Toronto and has strong opinions about snowsuit zipper placement.

DM

David M.

Co-Founder & Operations Director

(MBA Schulich, 10 years in supply chain operations)

David designed the fulfilment workflow that gets same-day shipments out of the GTA warehouse by 4:30 PM — a turnaround time he treats as non-negotiable. Before founding the company, he managed warehouse operations for a mid-size 3PL serving Canadian e-commerce brands. He built the internal inventory management system from scratch, tracks dwell time at the SKU level, and is known for quoting Incoterms 2020 provisions in casual conversation. Father of one toddler who is currently obsessed with trucks.

PS

Priya S.

Customer Experience Manager

(BA Communications, 6 years in retail CX)

Priya runs the support team and writes most of the product descriptions — a dual role she pursued deliberately, because "if you can't explain the product clearly, you can't support it well." She joined in early 2022 after managing customer service for a major Canadian beauty retailer. Her focus is response time (current average: 3.2 hours during business days) and making the return process as painless as ordering. She builds the size guides using actual Canadian children's measurements sourced from Health Canada growth charts.

JW

James W.

Warehouse & Logistics Lead

(Diploma in Supply Chain Mgmt, 8 years in fulfilment)

James oversees the 6,000-square-foot warehouse near Pearson Airport where every order is picked, packed, and labelled. He previously managed fulfilment for a Canadian subscription box company, handling 3,000+ parcels per week during peak season. His approach to packaging is almost architectural — minimal material, maximum protection, zero plastic. He introduced the custom-cut cardboard inserts that keep fragile toys stable during transit, reducing damage claims by over 60% in the first quarter after implementation.

NC

Nina C.

Buyer — Toys & Learning

(BEd Early Childhood, 7 years in toy retail)

Nina brings an early childhood education background to every buying decision, which means she evaluates toys not just for safety but for developmental appropriateness. She cross-references Bloom's taxonomy milestones with manufacturer age recommendations — a process that has led her to re-grade roughly 15% of the toys the company stocks. She spent four years as a retail buyer for a speciality toy chain in British Columbia before moving east to join Children Shop Canada. Aunt to three nieces who serve as very vocal product testers.

MB

Marco B.

Digital & Marketing Coordinator

(BComm Marketing, 5 years in e-commerce)

Marco handles everything from the website experience to email campaigns and social media content. He joined in 2023 after working with two Toronto-based DTC brands in the home goods space. His photography work — shot entirely on a consumer mirrorless camera with natural light — has become a recognizable part of the brand's visual identity. He insists on photographing products with actual children using them (with parental permission, of course), which is why the product images feel lived-in rather than sterile.
